THE 10 OF 2006

# NUMBER 5 :
"SUPERMAN RETURNS"

It’s all about HEART - not that the spectacle falters; this is the finest popular entertainment since the Star Wars trilogy closed. Superman doesn’t fly - he soars. The film is magnificently mounted, it moves like a speeding bullet and it's so respectful of Superman traditions that even the pickiest of die-hard fans should love it. After a lapse of two decades, it revitalizes the franchise and makes it seem fresh and alive.

Grandly conceived and sensitively drawn. 'Superman Returns', which infuses its action with poetry, soars as a love story filled with epic yearnings, thwarted desires and breathtaking imagery.

Would the Man of Steel fly for a new generation of moviegoers? Could Bryan Singer resurrect the series Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve revitalized in 1978, which sputtered out in 1987, three sequels later?

Bryan Singer did the right thing. From the start of this gorgeously crafted epic, you can feel that Singer has real love and respect for the most foursquare comics superhero of them all, as well as a reverence for the Richard Donner version, which serves as his visual and emotional template. In 'Superman Returns' (written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris from a story they cooked up with Singer), the caped crusader for truth, justice and peace... Superman(Brandon Routh) returns to crime-ridden Earth after a five-year detour amid the remains of his home planet. Back in Metropolis - where, as Clark Kent, he gets his old Daily Planet job back, he learns that Lois Lane(Kate Bosworth) has a nice, good-looking live-in boyfriend (James Marsden) and a son, and to add insult to heartbreak, has won a Pulitzer Prize for her article "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman". Also back from a stint behind bars is master criminal Lex Luthor(Kevin Spacey) with heinous plans to create a new continent(?) at the expense of several million lives.

Mr. Singer aroused a feeling that I, as a victim of Chronic Summer Superhero Movie Fatigue Syndrome, wasn't expecting: I felt happy to have Superman back, as if I'd actually missed the guy. You know that you are in the presence of a very high order when a comic-book romance can actually produce a lump in your throat. Newcomer Brandon Routh may or may not be a real actor, but he effortlessly lays claim to the iconic role, just as Christopher Reeve did. Indeed, he virtually duplicates Reeve in the way he plays Kent as a diffident, awkward Midwestern/Smallville colt. Singer cleverly doles out his hero in small portions, so that we're left, like all those awestruck admirers in Metropolis, wanting more glimpses of him than we get.

The movie follows form by making Lex Luthor a comic menace. Spacey, who can do ironic megalomania in his sleep, has a decidedly lighter touch than Gene Hackman. Both he, and Parker Posey as his moll, are great fun to watch. But Luthor's evil schemes are the most nonsensical and forgettable aspects of the movie. Singer's real forte is lyricism. This "Superman", which infuses its action with poetry, soars as a love story filled with epic yearnings, thwarted desires and breathtaking imagery: Lois, spied on with her lover's X-ray vision, ascending in a skyscraper's elevator; Superman, zapped with kryptonite, descending silently and helplessly through space.

This sturdy, poetic fantasy proves that, of all comic-book heroes, the Man of Steel belongs to everyone.

p/s:
Nothing makes me feel like a kid again like Superman and though 'Superman Returns' wasn't perfect, and could've been edited down, I admired the filmmakers' decision to make the movie, not a reimagining of the myth (a la 'Smallville' and 'Casino Royale' ), but a continuation of a 25-year-old movie series. At the same time they updated matters, and never more so than when Superman takes Lois Lane for yet another ride around Metropolis. As they hover over the city he asks her what she's hears. "Nothing," she says. "I hear everything," he responds. And that's the key. The problem with Superman has always been:

How do you find a credible villain? How do you create drama?

He is SUPERMAN: He should be able to defeat anyone. But perhaps the drama should be in his being Superman. In being able to hear everything. What a burden that must be. 'Superman Returns' suggest this. Not enough, but who knows, maybe that's the direction the sequel will go. Either way, it's good to have the big guy back.

It's good to feel like a kid again.

# NUMBER 6 :
2006 FIFA WORLD CUP

PORTUGAL IS THE NEW ENEMY.
OH! Come on... we've been robbed, man! Let us hear what the players said after that agonizing match :

Giovanni VAN BRONCKHORST
" It was a crazy game. We put in a lot of effort in search of victory. It’s hard to take being knocked out of the World Cup, after creating plenty of chances but failing to take them. We had no luck at all. The Portuguese defence kept it very tight. Being sent off the field isn’t a great feeling. "

Robin VAN PERSIE
" We’re all very disappointed about not getting through. We weren’t the weaker team. The most important thing was the support we received from our fantastic fans. "

Mark VAN BOMMEL
" We were delighted about making the last 16 after the group we had, but this was a match we should have won. It was the best we’ve played in four matches and we didn’t deserve to lose. We had the better goalscoring chances, but we didn’t take them. "

Andre OOIJER
" My feeling is we were the better team in the second half. It was an undeserved defeat. We’re headed in the right direction, but we’ve missed our target of making it into the next round. That’s a shame. "

Wesley SNEIJDER
" We’d rather have played badly today and won, and made it through to the quarter-finals. "

Edwin VAN DER SAR
" We fought hard and we should have won. We had far more chances in the second half. "

Ruud VAN NISTELROOIJ
" We’re angry and disappointed. We had plenty of chances, but that’s football for you. It’s awful sitting on the bench. You’re a fan and a player rolled into one. "

Kenapa kau ajer yang tak turun... wahai Marco Van Basten ku?

TAHUN MARI BERKAHWIN...

Dahsyat! Dahsyat! Dahsyat betul the power of jodoh ni...

# NUMBER 10 : "HEROES"

Thank you guys for HEROES. There was MAcGYVER, then X-FILES and of course, SMALLVILLE. Heroes is a serial saga about people all over the world discovering that they have superpowers and trying to deal with how this change affects their lives. Some of the superheroes introduced are strikingly profound to us comic book readers. Its about the next step of 'evolution of mankind'. A group of people aquiring special abilities in order to save the world. I have seen a lot of television in my time , but this is the best hour of television I have seen in recent years!

MARVEL CIVIL WAR: The Great Debate

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Forget about the law for a second. Forget about tradition, regulation or even public safety. The underlying issue, the thing that Captain America’s fighting so hard to protect, is FREEDOM.Tony Stark may be a futurist, but it’s Cap who’s looking at the long-term ramifications of superhero Registration, imprisonment and “rehabilitation.” Whatever gains are now being made to quell crime, ease public fears and regulate the superhero population will be for naught when government control supercedes civil liberties. With Tony in charge, if you have superpowers, you either get in line with the government or you go to jail. There’s no choice. There’s no freedom. And who takes over if and when Tony Stark dies? You better believe S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.S. government have a plan in place to do anything and everything needed in order to retain control of the massive superhero populace. Could the U.S. become a police state? Not if Captain America can help it.

IRON MAN

You may not want Iron Man to win the Civil War. But for the sake of the Marvel Universe, you’d better hope he does.Put aside his questionable methods and you’ll find a goal that’s beyond reproach: ensuring the safety of the civilian population. Think about it: Superhumans are one-man armies, some of whom have the power to singlehandedly level cities or even warp reality. These same “persons of mass destruction” have in many cases taken it upon themselves to fight crime, terrorism and tyranny (however they may define them) with no training or supervision. We wouldn’t tolerate such VIGILANTISM from a policeman with a pistol or a soldier with a machine gun; to permit it for people who carry immeasurably more power within their bare hands is both ludicrous and dangerous. And comparisons to racist policies like segregation just don’t wash: Iron Man wants superhumans to register and receive official training and licensing not because of who they are, but because of what they do—and what they do can be deadly.

and so, I ask you again...

WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?

Ahad, November 26, 2006

What's the point of the story?

Well...

Here's the point.

A chance to make up for our lost cause.

Bila masa pulak aku hantar pitching skrip ni kat Hollywood.

Damn.

They really did it... they stole my idea.

Itu idea aku.

Takpe... kata aku kat diri aku sendiri dengan harapan aku dapat memujuk diri aku sendiri. Selang beberapa tahun lepas tu, aku duduk diam lagi.

Aku ternampak satu trailer filem baru:

'Stranger than Fiction'.

One day.

THE ULTIMATE LOVE STORY THAT WILL DEFINE ALL LOVE STORY.

Tapi kenapa aku belum buat, dah ada orang lain buat dulu ni?

[Geram.

APA?

syyhhh... senyap sikit!

sedang duduk.

diam-diam.

tiba-tiba aku rasa hanyut dengar lagu ni(lagu lama... lama tak dengar)

***

Di Jalan Sesat (dipinjam utk semua)

Apakah takdir mimpi ini
mendatang berulang kali
darah penuh di tanah
sedangkan tangan menongkat langit
Apakah yang kuperjuangkan

apakah yang dipertahan
apakah harus aku jadi pahlawan

Oh.. Tuhan
Tidaklah aku layak untuk syurgaMu
Tapi aku tak terdaya menahan panas nerakaMu
Curiga di mata orang bagaikan mentari rembang

Bagaikan aku berdosa pada siapa saja

Sedang Tuhan di mana-mana
melihat semua dosa dalam serata usia
walau ditelan Segitiga Bermuda
Selaluku mengulangi dosa yang telah aku buat

dikutip kembali mengapa begini
MENGAPA BEGINI?!

Sedang Tuhan tahu sesiapa
untuk neraka untuk syurga
aku dah terpaksa
memilih syurgaMu dari pengertian padaMu kuharapkan
Aku cinta padaMu Tuhan

walaupun sesat jalan....

p/s: ooohh! Baru aku tau, selama ni lagu nasihat ni untuk aku sebenarnya.

International Guide to Living Fabulously in the Dream World

He's Faizal Mukhtar, the mad comic book genius from someplace called somewhere whose distinctive work has redefined comic authorship for the underground and the mainstream. From the mind-bending counter-culture thrill-ride of ANDAIKATA, to the truly heartbreaking love story of inter-dimensional time-travellers MASA KE SEMASA, to the re-invention of one of Malaysia's most enduring unsung icons with KISAH KEMBARA KAPTEN MALAYSIA... he has made comics almost every reader has fallen in love with.

Can't GET enough of him, eh?!

Khamis, November 02, 2006

listen...

listen hard.

If you take a life do you know what you'll give?
Odds are, you won't like what it is
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me?
By the merciless eyes of deceit?

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
Just next in line

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you ...Are you willing to die?

If you come inside things will not be the same
When you return to the night
And if you think you've won
You never saw me change
The game that we all been playing

I've seen diamonds cut through harder men
Than you yourself
But if you must pretend
You may meet your end

The coldest blood runs through my veins

Try to hide your hand
Forget how to feel... 'Life' is gone with just a spin of the wheel

The coldest blood runs through my veins

...you know my name.

Moments from Ramadhan '06

This will be a distant memory now... a something to remember. I have 'moved on'. I'M GONNA MISS ALL THE GOOD TIMES WE HAD HERE.

The REAL CATCH! The REAL DEAL! Tak sangka betul aku dapat rezeki sebegini hebat bulan puasa ni. Alhamdulillah...

Also a time to ponder and deliberate my life a little bit...

This is me being 'out of character'... maybe.

The fasting don't do no justice to my face, eh?!

The buffet king reign supreme!

Don't looked bemused, Encik Roy... tahun depan ada lagi chance boleh challenge aku! HARHAR!!!

It takes a lot of nerve for someone to jump up on stage, in front of a large crowd and say, "Hey! I've got a terrific story to tell you, so kindly give me your undivided attention for however long it takes me to tell it." And yet, that is exactly what anyone in this 'superficial' world does.

In some cases, the actual stage and venue is metaphorical, sometimes the story isn't exactly a story but experience, guidance or some other sort of lessons in life, but the "give me your attention and I'll make it worth while" part of the bargain is there in every case.

That's what this BULAN PUASA is ALL about.

In my every Ramadhan, I think I have a pretty good story to tell you people and believe it's well worth your time and attention. As a matter of fact, this year puasa has already spinning exciting stories for a bit more than a month, with more to come each and every time I think about it. But there's a GOOD CHANCE, if you read this special entry today in my blog, that you aren't YET a loyal reader. This is my attempt to make another good stab at turning you into one.

SO HERE IT IS, my pitch; the "I'm jumping up on a stage in front of you people" part : I invite you to read this entry(even though most of the photos is doing the story-telling) and if you like it, if it piques your interest, if it makes you want to know what happens next, I'd like to further invite you to keep reading and following this blogsite. As you'll see in the coming months, all sort of extra and additional interesting stories will be available, waiting for you to discover them!

I've got NEW 'place' for you to visit, NEW 'characters' for you to get to know(many of which are actually treasured friends from my past, present and future) that maybe you have or haven't heard of. And I've got some terrific stories to tell you too. I am glad you people decided to visit me and this time around...

I invite you to stay for as long as you like.

Welcome to the ALL NEW RELOADED Sandmanreborn blogsite!

Puasa Season 2006

Ya.

Detik menunggu waktu berbuka sangat getir.

UPDATE !

THE MAN BEHIND 'IRON MAN'

Originally, the comic debuted in the 1960s and Iron Man's origin involved Tony Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong Army. The movie version, written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, will be set in today's geopolitical climate.

The filmmakers looked for the best actor to embody the character. Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast they fly, they're about their character flaws. They're about their inner demons. They're about the struggles that they go through between being a man and being a hero.

It is said that Robert Downey jr. worked hard to get the role, getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Tony Stark sports in the comic books.

The point is, we looked at everybody and we found the best person for the role. It's as confident a casting move as they've ever done. The proof will be in the pudding but he is STARK a.k.a IRON MAN. The $100 million-plus movie will be produced by Kevin Feige and Avi Arad. Executive producers are Michael Helfant, Ari Arad, Louis D'Esposito, Peter Billingsley and John Favreau.

Marvel is now casting all supporting roles. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

IRON MAN The MOVIE !

Director Jon Favreau has now

CONFIRMED

Robert Downey Jr.

as

THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN

on his MySpace Blog. Here's what he said exactly:

"It is true. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. I am about as excited as I can be. I saw what he can do and he is extremely enthusiastic about playing Stark. I can say with absolute certainty that there is no better choice. The humor and emotional dimension he brings truly raises the bar on this project. Get ready."

Where time flies...

Do we really realize how much time we spend on our PC, between work, blogging, message boards, friendster/myspace and other online stuff... it's amazing that we get out at all.

But then again, finding good company and someone nice to talk to is a good reason to get out of the office.

Finish it.

Hi.

There is just one question for you and if I dont receive a reply I'm not going to be all bent out of shape about it, but how do I finish a story that I believe is going to be great? My problem is that I start what I belive is going to be a good story and I can never finish it. I have dozens upon dozens of unfinished short stories that I know would be good reads, but I just cant seem to finish them. If you have any input for me, it would be greatly appreciated, and I would also be honored to hear back from you.

***

How do you finish them? You finish them.

There's no magic answer, I'm afraid. This is how you do it : you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it's done. It's that easy... and that hard.

Read the stories over that you've left unfinished, pick out the one where you know what happens next and write that down, and keep writing until the story's finished. Then finish the next one or start a new one and finish that.

You may find that you need to have more of an ending in mind before you start.

I always used to know I was finishing something because instead of worrying about how it was going to end I was now worrying about how the next thing was going to start.

Most people can start a short story or a novel. If you're a writer, you can finish them. Finish enough of them and you may be good enough to be publishable.

Good luck.

THURSDAY TALES 2

I am SO predictable.

Here's the trouble of seeing old images in your head: it's easier to see the things that are wrong with it. Looking back on it now and if I had just slowed down, I don't think I would have made uncountable amateurish mistakes. I mean, with a little more planning and a closer inspection of this images we called memories... I would have avoided the silly one all together. Because it's the little things that makes you REALLY stupid, you know?

Dammit.

Case in point: me taking things for granted. Again, this one is a classic mistake I always make in life. I didn't think I'd jack it up this badly over the years. Like I said before, it's probably because I just needed a second to slow down and rilex now.

Anyway, I adjusted 'that' thing in and put it up for comparison - the 'before' image has already over-lapped the 'after' image. I don' t know if it's that much better, but for my peace of mind I think it is. I've told someone, I owe him/her another promise next time we saw each other and hopefully I'll be mindful of and avoid the mistakes I made the ones before.

Bah! Annoying.
